The objective of conservation site design is to maintain the natural path by which rainwater reaches rivers. This marks a fundamental change in design philosophy. In conventional design, stormwater is concentrated and rapidly conveyed to receiving waters; in conservation design, natural processes of interception and infiltration are preserved or mimicked. This conservation design approach reduces the flash flooding so typical of urban streams and protects people, infrastructure and wildlife. The results of conservation design are as functional and cost-effective as they are beautiful.
